How to strike a balance between traditional and modern parenting

(Written by Pallavi Utagi)

Parenting comes with a multitude of choices and decisions, and one of the most debated topics is whether to follow traditional baby care practices or embrace modern methods. In the ongoing and often impassioned debate between traditional and modern practices for baby care, it’s worth reflecting upon the past. Back in the day, there may not have been any R&D, medical labs, or even good old Google to help mothers seek answers. Instead, there was a keen observation, collective knowledge, and natural wisdom.

But some of the pearls of wisdom from our seasoned elders may be a bit past their expiration date. Back in their day, they might have had to resort to these quirks due to a lack of options or information. But guess what? Things have changed dramatically and baby-raising “oopsies” from yesteryears may become a bygone thing. Here is how we can solve the debate once and for all!

Feeding: Breastfeeding vs. Formula

The debate between breastfeeding and formula feeding has been ongoing for decades. While breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits for both mother and baby, formula feeding provides convenience and flexibility. Fortunately, modern parents can choose a balanced approach. Many mothers today opt for a combination of breastfeeding and formula feeding known as mixed feeding. This allows mothers to provide the best of both worlds, ensuring their baby receives essential nutrients while accommodating their own lifestyle and preferences.

Diapering

Diapering has always been a contentious topic when it comes to traditional vs. modern baby care. On one hand, there are hand stitched cloth nappies which have been used for generations, and on the other, there are disposable diapers, hailed for their convenience. However, there’s a middle ground. Cloth diapers from a reputed brand combine the ease of modern diapering with the benefits of traditional cloth. These diapers consist of three main components: a skin-friendly waterproof outer layer, a Dry Feel pad, and a Booster Pad. The result is a diaper that is not only eco-friendly and gentle on your baby’s skin but also incredibly convenient. Some of the diapers are designed to be reusable and washable as well!

Baby Food: Organic Ingredients vs. Store-Bought

Festive offer

When it comes to introducing solid foods to your baby, you have the option of homemade purees or store-bought baby food. While whole food cereal options have become a go-to staple for baby food, the ingredient list and nutritional facts are now the checkpoint for parents rather than the brand names. These days many brands are offering easy and ready-to-use options made with Indian traditionally advised grains like Ragi, millets, fox nuts etc. It’s all about balance.

Traditional Free Play vs. Early Learning Programs

In the realm of child development, it’s like deciding between letting your little one explore a beautiful garden at their own pace versus taking them on a guided tour. Traditional unstructured learning is akin to the organic, self-guided garden exploration, where children are free to wander and discover the flowers and butterflies as they wish. Conversely, early learning programs resemble the guided tour, providing a structured, educational approach with specific stops and information. Striking a balance means letting your child wander in the garden of curiosity while occasionally joining the guided tour for a more focused educational experience. It’s about nurturing their growth in a way that suits their blossoming minds.

In the world of baby care, the traditional vs. modern debate may seem unending. However, parents today are fortunate to have access to the best of both worlds. Whether it’s diapering with cloth diapers or a balanced approach to feeding and other aspects of baby care, remember that you have the freedom to create a customized parenting journey that works best for you and your baby. Ultimately, it’s not about choosing between traditional ways or the modern route but finding the perfect concoction that suits your family’s needs and values.
